Based on the great tradition of the “Mannheim Tonschule”, the first state music academy in Germany founded in 1776, the State University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim can look back on a successful tradition of over two hundred years.
The university offers study opportunities at a top international level with outstanding profes-sors. The degree courses focus on artistic, artistic-pedagogical, art-theoretical and art-scientific education in the fields of music and dance. The courses are embedded in various bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Moreover, the university offers courses within the 3rd study cycle such as postgraduate courses, doctorate and habilitation.
Artistic, theoretical and academic work is closely linked at the university. The interdisciplinary artistic work of the students takes place in the orchestras and choirs of the university, the en-semble for new music "Incontro" and the very numerous chamber music formations. The results of the university's work are presented to the public in almost 500 events annually as well as in numerous media (publications of books, essays and CDs, publications on the inter-net etc.).
The focus is on the comprehensive education of the students through intensive supervision by the teaching staff. All students receive individual support, but also the necessary freedom to try out their own personal innovative artistic ideas. At the same time, they are prepared for the profession of artist, art teacher or art scientist at an excellent international level. In the courses, students are enouraged to work and learn independently, also with a view to lifelong learning. The various courses of study are interdisciplinary and include the necessary interdisciplinary key competences.
